 Untitled No. 12

Faded symbols etched in a temple’s nave

Beckon a lone pilgrim whose desires crave

A bounty beyond fortune’s humble yield

Wealth above kings, harvest of boundless field

Mighty empires ruled from a sceptered throne

Divine right beneath beatified stone

Shrouded voices whisper amid the rows

Recitations of a forbidden prose

Echoed verses resound through timid ears

A racing heart beats amid nascent fears

Stark truths revealed in a soul’s hidden eye

Nothing withstands the material lie

Gold crushed to dust beneath the weight of greed

Blighted grain withers from a stunted seed

Heavy crowns corrode beneath tainted rust

Drowned in the blood of imperial lust

A flight away in a moment’s terror

The admission of a wretch’s error

Sage winds carry a message from above

To those who seek silver for want of love

Thou must lead an honest, affirming life

Freed from the shackles of acquired strife

Crested wave claims the final galleon

As virtue endures the creeping eon

Castle and cornerstone returned to earth

Goodness maintains inimitable worth

Morning light absolves an acknowledged sin

Illuminating riches borne within
